Welcome to our web page.
The Waukegan Swedish Glee Club has a long history. We celebrated our 100th anniversary
in 2005. The purpose has always been to
maintain a male chorus, to promote Swedish song, to nurture and disseminate
Scandinavian culture, and to sponsor social activities.
It is not necessary to be of Swedish or even Scandinavian
descent or to speak the language. Although about half the songs we sing are
in Swedish, almost none of the singers can speak Swedish. Just a love of
choral singing and maybe a little knowledge of music is all that is
required. The Swedish Glee Club has always been a male chorus, but we now
sponsor and support a separate chorus for women. The Waukegan Swedish
Women's Chorus is now a member of the American Union of Swedish Singers and
they are growing and getting better each month and We invite all who love to sing to
consider being a part of either the Men's or Ladies chorus.
We rehearse every week at the American Legion Post 264 in
Lake Forest, IL. 801 McKinley Rd. at 8:00 p.m. Our director is Mr.
Jeff DeLay. Jeff received a
Bachelor of Sacred Music degree at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He also
directs the Chicago Swedish Male Chorus and leads the youth program and
directs choirs at First Presbyterian Church in Waukegan. Our accompanist is
Ms. Ruth Porikos. Ruth earned her masters degree in organ performance and
church music at Northwestern University. She is much in demand as an
accompanist around the north shore of Chicago.
We have two major concerts each year. Our Christmas
Julmiddag includes the concert and a grand buffet and is a wonderful way to
celebrate the holiday. Then in the spring we present our Spring Concert,
which is performed at one of several Lutheran churches in our area. We also
sing smaller concerts for retirement homes, hospitals and local celebrations
during each year.
Waukegan Swedish Glee Club is a member of a national
organization called the American Union of
Swedish Singers. The AUSS consists of 34 choruses located around the
country. It sponsors conventions every two years.
We have for sale a 41 page history of the
Waukegan Swedish Glee Club compiled and written by our own Fred Fortney.
